Marco Bassani, a professor of Politics at the University of Milan, ripped into the EU’s European vision and said it is just the "elite" who want the bloc. Speaking on RT, Mr Bassani said: “The European Union is really a cold war tool that’s not been out – the United States wanted one single voice in Europe – it never worked. “Right now it is a recipe for economic stagnation, especially in Italy. And it’s felt like that.”
The politics professor said that “whole point” of the EU was to hide the “French witness” and “German strength”. He added: “There are certain things that you cannot hide anymore. So I guess it was really the elite who wanted this Europe very much. But there’s no European vision anymore. “There is nothing like the real problems that are there. Economic stagnation. Italy has been in no growth for 20 years. Germany has been rolling at a rate which is 0.6 to 0.7 after unification which is certainly not enough.
“There is nothing of this robust economic growth and there is a lot of immigration. People are worried that societies are changing very rapidly and there is no common European vision on that.” A huge anti-EU movement has spread across the continent in recent months as Italy elected two populist parties to form a coalition and an anti-euro party entered the German Parliament for the first time, while Poland and Hungary continue to face a growing eurosceptic movement.
